Molde manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has claimed he is not close to signing a deal to join Aston Villa.The Birmingham outfit sacked Alex McLeish after finishing a disappointing 16th in the Premier League and are believed to be interested in appointing the former Manchester United star.
The former Manchester United striker has refuted claims he is close to replacing Alex McLeish at Villa Park, revealing he only went for 'an informal chat' with the club.
However, the 39-year-old revealed that talks have not reached a formal stage and hinted there are other candidates being considered.
“I can confirm that I have spoken to Aston Villa. There were no negotiations, but first an informal chat. They also have other candidates they want to talk to,” Solskjaer told Romsdals Budstikke.
“I wanted to show respect for one of the big clubs in the Premier League by meeting their questions about the initial call. I am the manager of the MFK and have only had a casual conversation.
Solskjaer led the Norwegian outfit to the league title in his debut campaign following three years in charge of the Red Devils' reserves.
Aston Villa also released a statement on Friday afternoon that confirmed they have begun the process of searching for a replacement for McLeish but refused to divulge any of the names in the frame.
"We are aware that certain individuals have been linked with our managerial vacancy but, out of respect to all potential candidates and any clubs they may currently be employed by, we will not discuss specific individuals by name," it read.
