Football stars from Europe and the Middle East are to take part in the second Dubai Indoor Football Championship from Sunday.
The tournament, organised by Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) in partnership with Dubai Sports Council and Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment, will see former professionals from Spain, Italy, Holland, the UAE, Morocco and Egypt battle it out.
Sunday sees two exhibition matches at Dubai World Trade Centre’s Shaikh Rashid Hall, which has been transformed into an indoor arena complete with an 800-square-metre Astroturf pitch that seats over 2,500 spectators, with Real Madrid facing Barcelona at 7pm and Ajax versus Roma at 9pm.
The European teams will be joined by four regional teams: UAE Stars, Egypt Stars, Morocco Stars and Zamalek, promising a treat for football fans in Dubai.
The five-a-side tournament was won last year by Spanish giants Real in a nail-biting final against arch-rivals Barcelona.
This year, some of the popular players include former French World-Cup winner Christian Karembeu, Champions League winners Fernando Morientes, Ruben de la Red and Amavisca (all Real Madrid); Gerard SegĂș, Gabriel Francisco, Victor Munez and Santiago Ezquerro (all Barcelona); former Italian international and Roma midfielder Damiano Tomassi; and former Dutch internationals Michael Mols and Kizito Musampa (Ajax).
Adding to the excitement of the competition, the first Dubai Freestyle Football Championship will take place alongside the event, featuring 20 local and regional freestylers competing for a cash prize and the title of regional champion.
This event is organised by Tawasol Media in partnership with Dubai Sports Council, Dubai World Trade Centre and the Arab Freestyle Football Foundation. It will take place in between the scheduled tournament matches, with three international freestyle judges naming the winner at the end of the tournament on July 12.
