The defender has revealed that he would like his Red Devils team-mate, who only returned to action three months ago, to carry on playing for at least another season.
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is determined to persuade team-mate Paul Scholes to postpone his retirement following his “phenomenal” impact since his January return.
The 37-year-old was a shock inclusion in the Red Devils’ Premier League squad at the start of the year after six months out of the game, and has gone on to play an instrumental part in United’s continuing drive for their 20th league title.
Whilst the former England midfielder is believed to be favouring the idea of carrying on at Old Trafford for another season, boss Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that talks will not be held until the end of the season and Ferdinand is hoping the discussions will have a positive outcome.
“It would be nice if he could play another season,” Ferdinand told the Daily Mail. “But with Scholesy, you know it doesn’t make a difference what anybody else says. He’s his own man and he’ll make his own decision.”
Scholes has yet to experience defeat in the league since returning to action, and with United currently sitting three points clear at the top of the table, Ferdinand was quick to credit his team-mate’s contribution.
“There are a number of reasons why we’ve done well since the turn of the year and there’s no doubt that one of them is Paul Scholes," he said.
“It’s not just the quality of his football that impresses me but the way he has adapted physically.
“He was out of the game for months and yet he’s come straight back into top-level football and he’s hardly looked out of place. At this stage of his career, that’s phenomenal.
”
